Some of you may be aware of my pending trip to Spain/Portugal in my Fat Ariya. Away for 2 weeks from Wednesday. Now we are no longer members of the EU we have to display a UK, not GB, sticker on the rear of the car. I decided that rather than use a self adhesive one I would get a magnetic version that I could recycle for further visits and of course not leave any lasting damage. As I leave Monday to stay with friends in Plymouth before catching the ferry I thought I would try the magnetic sticker out after cleaning the car for the trip.

Slight problem.

The boot is actually plastic, not metal, like the rest of the body. I'm used to plastic front ends these days, my Qashqai for example. I did not realise this has now migrated back there. Thinking about it I wondered if this was a weight issue and in order to shave as much off as possible that's the way they went. Did make me wonder about what might happen in a rear ender whilst carrying a dog!

The chassis and side structure should save the day unless its a really high up rear ender at a specific angle I guess.
One thing I learnt is that those plastic sections, if damaged are dam expensive to fix. Way more than a metal version.
Well at least it won't rust..

Update on Spain/Portugal trip:

Please don't tour Portugal without the Miio app. Tried to use contactless CC twice yesterday, no joy. Setting up Miio is a bit of a nightmare so don't leave the UK until you have. I nearly came seriously unstuck. More another time.

Spain so far has been a breeze but only because I have only charged once and used a Tesla Supercharger at Benavente. 12 charge points, only 2 in use when I arrived. Arrived with 40% and got to 94% in 47 minutes. Peaked at 109 kW and only cost 53 cents per kW, compared to 79p at Shell Recharge before I left UK and at less than1/2 the speed.

The Ariya performed superbly on the journey of just over 200 miles and despite averaging 60 mph and a lot of climbing at the beginning I averaged 3.7 m/kWh. Suggesting a range of 322, pretty much bang on the optimistic numbers I was seeing before I bought it.

Charged at a powerdot charger today (150 kW). Peaked at 109 and got me from 28% to 98% in 1h 6m costing 55 cents per kW. I've only tried 3 times to charge so by no means definitive but my impression is that the infrastructure, albeit patchy, is ahead of EV ownership. I would be interested to know what the ratio is compared to UK. The Miio app shows live data and most points look relatively open.

Off for a 🍺 now. ;)

To many apps still. Should be contactless all the way.

Sounds like you did well though.

I haven't really owned up to the embarrassing bit. The clue is in" Don't leave the UK without the Miio app" fully functioning before touring Portugal.

It certainly is. Today for example I appear to have discovered something odd. I'm using the Granny Charger to get an overnight charge from the Hotel, a very kind offer as they aren't charging me. The oddity is whenever I unlocked the car it seemed to stop charging. As soon as I turned on the car it started to charge again. Turn off the car lock it and it continues to charge, confirmed by the app showing the stop start nature. Anyone else notice this? It may be in the manual for all I know but I don't recall reading about it. Any clues?

The Ariya stops charging on unlock but remains the charge after 30 seconds by itself, that's what's described in the manual and the behavior of my car.
