Body Knocking Noise

A number of months ago, my car developed a pronounced knocking sound slightly reminiscent of tapping a plasterboard wall gently with one's knuckle. It is most evident travelling over undulating surfaces rather than potholes, as such road irregularity induces lateral rather than longitudinal reaction. Of course, as speed rises, then the noise becomes drowned out by wind and road noise. At 10mph, it is quite prominent. This week, my car had its second service and I asked the dealer to locate and fix this intruding noise. The outcome was, "we have checked all steering and suspension joints and everything is good. We could not find the source of the noise but we drove 2 other used Ariyas and they make the same knocking". So that's it. A common fault and we don't know what it is! Anyone else got this issue to give me more ammunition going forward?

It's not coming from inside the cabin but from the "drivetrain" instead, is that right?

It's definitely not in the cabin. The Nissan fitter and I both thought it was on the right hand side around the footwell. I don't believe that it is part of the drive train and they checked all the steering joints. The noise is most apparent at low speed so creep forward with no accelerator and it is really quite intrusive.

"It's a common fault, we don't know what it is" is NOT a solution. I'd push back hard, maybe try a different dealer or even a specialist mechanic.

If you’re still under warranty, you could try pushing them for a more thorough investigation or maybe get a second opinion from another dealership.

Thanks Xuana, I intend to push back but I am trying to find out from the forum whether or not anyone else has the problem before I engage the service manager tomorrow.

What I could tell you is that mine doesn't have any weird noise outside the cabin, and my dealer has been able to fix all noises inside my cabin, if fact today I'm booking my car for a new glovebox that doesn't rattle on rough terrain.

Just a little update. I took the car back to the dealer yesterday and they located and fixed the fault that was creating the knocking noise. It was a failed joint on the front right hand drop link. A premature failure after only 10.5k miles but, thankfully, the noise is gone!
